FASHIONABLE ROCK? The Hard Rock Cafe, scheduled to open soon at Fashion Island, may strike a few notes of discord at the Newport Beach Planning Commission tonight. The owners want the same flashing, 50-foot-tall, guitar-shaped sign the chain uses in Las Vegas. But city staffers say its “monolithic proportions” are not acceptable. . . . Hard Rock’s James Rees responds: “It will help to identify our newest Hard Rock Cafe as a tasteful yet vibrant tribute to pop culture and rock ‘n’ roll.”
