Zeke Jones, the U.S. freestyle wrestler who won the silver medal in the 114.5-pound class Wednesday night, wrote a letter to himself when he was 9.

Jones, who grew up in a wrestling family, wrote: “One day, I want to be a world champion wrestler and an Olympic champion.”

On an envelope, he wrote “From me to me.” Then he placed the letter inside and sealed the envelope. He handed it to his mother and told her to give it back to him in 10 years.

Ten years later, the letter was pinned to the Jones family Christmas tree.

“I’d forgotten all about it, until my Mom gave it back to me,” he said.

Wednesday, Jones lost to North Korean Li Hak Son, 8-1, in the gold-medal match at the Olympics. Last year, he won a world championship in Bulgaria.

This a daily roundup of Olympic-related items from reporters in Barcelona from the Los Angeles Times, Newsday and Baltimore Sun, all Times-Mirror newspapers.
