Garlic Assn. Protests Chinese Shipments: Officials of a trade group accused China of dumping garlic in the United States at below-market prices and warned of a potentially “disastrous” effect on 10,000 U.S. jobs. The Garlic Assn. said two Chinese ships are headed to the United States, each carrying 1,000 metric tons of garlic, worth about $1 million at current wholesale prices. But the Gilroy, Calif.-based association said the Chinese garlic is subsidized by the government and is being sold at prices below American production costs. The group said it is making its concerns known to the U.S. government.
