WORLD IN BRIEF : SOUTH AFRICA : Protests Continue; Talks May Resume

Protests against South Africa’s white government continued, but President F. W. de Klerk and ANC leader Nelson Mandela indicated that black-white negotiations could resume soon. The scattered demonstrations were much smaller than three previous days of strikes and mass rallies called by the African National Congress and its allies to try to hasten the end of white minority rule. In Natal, ANC Secretary General Cyril Ramaphosa, Communist Party head Chris Hani and trade union leader Jay Naidoo said they suspect police of the KwaZulu homeland of complicity in the shooting of 11 people Sunday in the township of Esikwahini. They called for U.N. observers to be sent to the scene.
