OLYMPICS LETTERS

Share

Like the ugliest of Americans, NBC has lumbered into Barcelona with a peculiarly petty slant: The Olympics would be a lot more fun without all these foreigners.

Things are going well, it seems, only when America wins the gold. If we don’t win, it’s only by a fluke, and the reports focus on the “disappointment” of the American “loser,” rather than the achievement of the winner. We’re proud of our athletes, wherever they finish. And we’re impressed with the winners, wherever they’re from.

With these Olympics being a celebration of the progress and promise of recent world events, NBC’s parochial attitudes seem especially outdated and out of touch.
