Olympic women’s long jump champion Heike Drechsler has no sympathy for former East German teammates Katrin Krabbe, Grit Breuer and Manuela Derr, who admitted last week that they had been using clenbuterol.

Krabbe and Breuer were suspended earlier this year for attempting to manipulate a drug test, although they were exonerated by the international governing body for track and field on a technicality.

“If they still haven’t learned anything from this whole situation, then they have to be punished,” Drechsler said. “It appears they haven’t learned anything. For me, the case is closed.”

As for reports since the East German sports system collapsed that she was a drug user, Drechsler said: “It’s just a lie. Well-known athletes have been included in this speculation because it sells better that way. But I didn’t need the stuff. I have enough talent without it.”
