The people of Barcelona have a flair of their own. The women manage to dress fashionably and comfortably at the same time. The dining in the restaurants is both elegant and gracefully relaxed.

It was with such understated style that the waiters at an upscale restaurant Saturday night let it be known that Spain had beaten Poland for the gold medal in soccer-- the sport in Spain.

There were yelps of joy, no hurrahs. The waiters opened bottles of cava, the Spanish bubbling wine, and without a word of explanation poured for all.

* This a daily roundup of Olympic-related items from reporters in Barcelona from the Los Angeles Times, Newsday and Baltimore Sun, all Times-Mirror newspapers.
