When either Blair Bender, 5 1/2, of Encino, or Kyle Miller, 8, of Pacific Palisades, is told to go to her room, it’s not so much punishment as encouragement to let her imagination run wild. Blair’s bedroom is fit for a princess, decorated with an elaborate mural of an enchanted lake and wisteria-covered trees, plus a castle-shaped headboard, floor lamp and storage unit. (Blair appears in the mural as Rapunzel.) “I tried to find something that would suit her personality,” says Blair’s mother, Karen Bender. “This room fits her: She loves to play dress-up.” In Kyle’s bedroom, vintage and castoff items from swap meets and garage sales lend a cozy feel. Among the old-fashioned clutter are a corner curio shelf, handed down from Kyle’s great-grandmother, a slipcovered armchair from the Rose Bowl flea market, and a tea table fashioned out of the bottom of an old chair. Like her mother, assemblage artist Heidi Wianecki, Kyle enjoys collecting things, among them, rocks, shells and anything with a cat on it.
