A district court jury has awarded $17.1 million to the family of a boy severely injured in a 1989 school bus accident.

Kristopher Sieger, now 15, was seated next to an emergency door when the bus suffered brake failure and careened off a road. Sieger, who tried to brace himself by grabbing a handle that caused the door to fly open, fell out of the bus face-first. He was disfigured and has had seven operations so far.

The jury ruled that a safety bolt on the door was too short and that it might not have sprung open had it been longer.

An attorney for Thomas Built Buses of High Point, N.C., said the ruling, announced Friday, will be appealed.
