Latinos Targeted in Lung Campaign

The American Lung Assn.’s new health campaign for Southern California’s Latino community, Aprendamos a Cuidar de Nuestros Pulmones (Learning to Take Care of Our Lungs), will kick off Thursday.

Kickoff activities will include displays on such subjects as asthma education, tuberculosis prevention and smoking. There will also be speakers, children’s events, tips on air pollution survival and other events.

Thursday’s event, “Usted Y Su Salud” (“You and Your Health”), was designed for Spanish speakers, but everyone is welcome. It will take place at the Tianguis Market in Montebello from noon to 3 p.m. Call (213) 935-5864 or (818) 797-5864.

ENVIRONMENT

Dan Silver, founder of the Endangered Habitats League, will discuss past efforts and plans for habitat protection in Southern California at the meeting of the Los Angeles-Santa Monica Mountains Chapter of the California Native Plant Society tonight at 7 p.m. at the Ocean Park Branch of the Santa Monica Public Library. MARINE SCIENCE

The Orange County Marine Institute’s Floating Laboratory Program offers insights into the techniques of ocean research. Participants on a research vessel take part in a hands-on examination of marine specimens collected during the cruise. Programs are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Fridays through Sept. 18. SCIENCE FOR KIDS

The Cabrillo Marine Museum’s Touch Tank will be at the Kidspace Museum on Thursday for workshops led by marine educator Jim Burcheri. The workshops on Southern California tidal animals will be held at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. Call (818) 449-9144.
