Iraqi aircraft bombed Shiite villages with napalm following the failure of amphibious operations against rebels in Iraq’s southern marshes, Iran’s official news agency reported Saturday.

Quoting “reliable sources,” the agency said more than 100 Iraqi soldiers were killed in fighting with Shiite rebels in the Al Doub and Abu Sabour areas of Amarah, 160 miles southeast of Baghdad.

The agency said government forces used MIG-23s and Sukhoi bombers in subsequent attacks “as a result of which many civilians were killed.” Napalm bombs were used against outlying villages.

The attacks were said to have taken place over the last few days.
