Using an unloaded camera as a ruse, two Cuban field hockey players slipped away from teammates in Guttenberg, N.J., and defected to the United States while pretending to take photographs as tourists, they said.
Michel San Martin Gutierrez, 22, and Norberto Roche Rodriguez, 20, had drifted about 50 feet away from teammates, they said, when a car driven by members of the Cuban American National Foundation pulled alongside. They jumped in and the car sped off.
Their coach, Julian Fernandez, had defected Aug. 8 after the team arrived at a New York airport.
