Reinout Kroon; Helped Design Turbojet Engine

Reinout P. Kroon, 85, who helped design the first turbojet engine. Born in the Netherlands, Kroon studied engineering in Zurich, Switzerland, then moved to the United States in the late 1920s. He became a U.S. citizen seven years later. As a chief engineer at Westinghouse Electric in Philadelphia during the 1940s, he became a leader in the design of the turbojet aircraft engine. In 1960, he left Westinghouse to teach mechanical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, retiring in the early 1970s. In West Chester, Pa., on Aug. 4 of injuries suffered in a traffic accident.
