NORTHRIDGE : Court Aide Training Program Gets Grant

Share

A Cal State Northridge program that trains people to interpret for the deaf in court has received a $344,559 grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

The money will be used over a three-year period to train about 90 people to help the deaf cope with the legal justice system, said Kaine Thompson, a CSUN spokeswoman.

Among those trained will be interpreters and educators, who will eventually help set up other training programs, she said.

“Communication in the judicial system is critical because any misunderstanding . . . could reduce the rights of deaf persons and promote injustice,” said Lawrence Fleischer, director of the project and a professor in Cal State Northridge’s deaf studies program.
