Let’s Drop Mallets, Wet Our Palates

Here’s a bit of news bound to bring a chukker, er, chuckle.

Geyser Peak, a winery in Geyserville, has been named the official winery of the venerable U.S. Polo Assn. It is, not surprisingly, the first winery to achieve that status in the group’s 102-year history.

By no small coincidence, the owners of Geyser Peak are the polo-playing Trione family of Santa Rosa. Henry Trione has been an association member for almost 30 years, and his sons, Victor and Mark, founded the Santa Rosa Polo Club in 1969.

Does Geyser Peak advocate swigging wine while swinging the mallet? “Oh, heavens no,” said spokeswoman Ann Rizzo. “We serve wine after the polo game.”
