Kerry O’Hanlon and Derek Weatherford posted the fourth-fastest times ever by Americans in the 100-meter backstrokes Thursday in the U.S. Swimming National Championships at Mission Viejo.

O’Hanlon rebounded from a disastrous 200 backstroke on Tuesday to clock a pool-record time of 1 minute 1.85 seconds.

The 17-year-old from Richmond, Va., swam the fastest 200 backstroke in Tuesday’s preliminaries, but in the final she ran into the lane ropes and finished sixth, 2.3 seconds slower than her morning swim.

In the 100 backstroke preliminaries, O’Hanlon hit the ropes again.

Before the final, Quantico (Va.,) Coach Don Regenbogen gave her some tips, enabling her to stay away from the ropes, beat the field by 1.27 seconds, and become the fourth-fastest American.

“That seems so wild,” O’Hanlon said. “I don’t want to think about it. I might get a big ego.”

In need of an ego boost, Weatherford eclipsed Jeff Rouse’s pool record of 55.34 with a 55.21.

Other winners:

--Kristine Quance, 17, of Calabasas-based CLASS Aquatics, set a pool record of 1:09.60 in the 100 breaststroke, breaking the mark of 1:10.56 set by Lydia Morrow in the preliminaries. It was Quance’s third title during the meet and third record. All three times would have placed her fourth at the Barcelona Olympics. Quance, slowed by mononucleosis, was fourth in the Olympic trials.

--Despite flu, Olympic gold medalist and 200 breaststroke world record-holder Mike Barrowman won his first national title in the 100 breaststroke with a pool-record 1:02.02.

--Angie Wester-Krieg, 27, won the 100 butterfly in 1:01.26, becoming the oldest U.S. swimmer to ever win a national championship.
