M.A. Greenstein, curator of education at the Laguna Art Museum since January, 1991, has resigned to concentrate on her teaching and writing. The museum is seeking a replacement for the full-time position.

Laguna Art Museum Director Charles Desmarais praised Greenstein’s energy and commitment to her job. “She did it marvelously well. The next person who does her job will have a tall order to fill.” He said she left the museum because “she was realizing that, as much as she enjoyed working at the museum and as much as we respected her . . . it meant that she had to step away from her more scholarly pursuits.”

Greenstein was unavailable for comment.

Greenstein, the holder of a doctorate in education from Claremont Graduate School, a master’s degree in dance and a bachelor’s degree in art history--both from UCLA--gave the education program at the Laguna Beach museum an authoritative new direction during her 1 1/2-year tenure.

Her projects included putting together an intellectually challenging lecture series to complement the exhibition “Morphosis: Buildings and Projects” and luring the fanciful and innovative Vitruvius program (developed at the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Santa Monica) to the museum, where it was taught by architect Molly Schneider.

Greenstein also revitalized the “Children’s Corner” on the lower level of the museum, managed the outreach program for schoolchildren and kept the “Good Morning, Laguna” lecture series stocked with speakers appealing to a wide range of interests.
