The bullet-riddled bodies of two police officers, apparently slain by drug traffickers, have been recovered on the outskirts of the city, the Notimex news agency reported Friday.

The bodies were discovered at separate locations a day earlier in hill country outside the city. Both had been beaten and shot in the head, police told the official news agency.

It was not immediately reported whether the deaths were related. But the deaths of the city police officer and a ex-federal policeman brought to 11 the number of officers slain this year in the violence-plagued border area.

Tijuana is a frequent crossing point into the United States for drug smugglers. On Friday, police reported that they had seized 400 grams of heroin from a suitcase in a passenger bus and arrested the driver.
