MUSIC AND DANCE : “LEONIDAS KAVAKOS PLAYS DEBUSSY, KREISLER, PAGANINI, SCHUBERT, TCHAIKOVSKY, WIENIAWSKI & MORE.”

Leonidas Kavakos, violin; Peter Nagy, piano. Delos DE 3116. Put an exclamation point and as much emphasis as you can muster after the first three words of that cumbersome title. The young Greek violinist does indeed play, as neatly and nimbly, as fast and furious, as supplely and seductively as anyone. This disc includes all the predictable display favorites--Bazzini’s “La ronde des lutins,” Paganini’s “Le Streghe,” four of Kreisler’s most popular pieces and the most common of Wieniawski’s Polonaises Brillantes--but delivered with distinctly uncommon clarity and freshness. The only drawback is the longest work on the program, Ernst’s empty Fantasia on Rossini’s “Otello.” (Also be aware that the Schubert in the title is the violinist Franz of “L’Abeille,” not the familiar Franz of songs, symphonies and not a few pieces for fiddle.) Nagy’s accompaniments support Kavakos at every nuanced turn.
