A cruise ship sank today about two hours after colliding with a fishing trawler, killing at least two people and leaving dozens missing, officials said.

Reports on the number of people missing ranged from 30 to more than 100. There were conflicting figures on the number of passengers and crew, maritime officials said.

Malaysian marine officials said about 480 people were rescued from among the 600 people on the Greek-managed Royal Pacific in the Straits of Malacca, off southern Malaysia. But Greek officials said 534 people were aboard the ship and at least 504 were rescued.

Private crafts, marine police vessels and helicopters joined in the rescue and search for passengers and crew, the marine officials said.

The names and nationalities of the two people killed were not immediately known, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Two Indonesians and two Greeks were hurt and taken to a hospital in Port Dickson, about 50 miles south of Kuala Lumpur.

Police said the trawler was reported to be still afloat, but there was no immediate word on its crew.
