MONROVIA, Liberia — About 15,000 refugees flooded into Monrovia on Monday, fleeing renewed battles between rival rebel groups in west and northern Liberia, the Liberia National Red Cross said.
The refugees reported that hundreds of people are dying from starvation, disease and the fighting.
Battles between chief rebel leader Charles Taylor and Sierra Leone-based fighters loyal to slain President Samuel K. Doe grew more fierce last week. It appears to be the most intense since a West African peacekeeping force imposed a cease-fire in Liberia’s civil war in November, 1990.
