Hurricane Fails to Cool Tabasco Firm
Tabasco lovers can relax. McIlhenny Co., whose peppery sauce is one of Louisiana’s hottest products, survived Hurricane Andrew intact.
Well, pretty much intact.
The company says some of its pepper crop was damaged, and power outages forced it to suspend production, but it still has enough inventory--about four weeks’ worth in 20 warehouses around the country--to keep hot sauce flowing.
“They’re not skipping a beat,” said a spokeswoman.
The factory, located on tiny Avery Island in an area of south-central Louisiana that bore the brunt of the hurricane’s force, survived with only broken windows and other minor damage.
Concern about the availability of Tabasco ran so high that an editor in Guam called a New Orleans paper for details.
