University of Chicago archeologists in Jordan have unearthed a cache of 32 gold coins that a researcher says give a glimpse of how extensive travel and commerce were in medieval Arab society.

The coins, 29 of which are about 1,000 years old, were found in May by Donald Whitcomb, a research associate at the university’s Oriental Institute.

The 1,000-year-old coins, unworn and shiny beneath a coating of dust, were minted in Morocco, 2,000 miles west of where they were found at Aqaba, a Jordanian port on the Red Sea.
