AMERICA IN TROUBLE

Share

“America’s Crack-Up” (by Jonathan Rauch, July 26) provoked my brain to come up with two ideas on how we can crawl out of the social cesspool America seems to have become.

For years, some tax laws have been directed toward improving society. The deduction of interest paid on home mortgages encourages home ownership, a good thing. Why not have a homemaker’s deduction as well--a large enough amount of money to cause people to think seriously about staying married and raising children properly?

In the area of crime, our laws have created a vast army of people who live off the illegal drug traffic. We need to cut off this source of income by decriminalizing drug use. At the same time, of course, schools and families must educate young people to beware of drugs and avoid using them. Pushers would go out of business, and we would reduce our criminal population, clear the jail and court logjams and relieve our overloaded police forces.
