Steve Buechele broke up Tom Candiotti’s no-hitter with a two-out single in the seventh inning, and the Chicago Cubs then scored two unearned runs to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-0 Monday behind Greg Maddux’ five-hitter for their fourth straight victory.

Buechele, who stole second, scored when first baseman Eric Karros fumbled Derrick May’s hard hit grounder. May stole second and came home on Dwight Smith’s single.

The last-place Dodgers have lost six straight games.

Maddux (16-10) allowed five hits, walked one and struck out six for his 12th career shutout and third of the season.

On Sunday, Cubs rookie Jim Bullinger pitched seven no-hit innings against the San Francisco Giants at Wrigley Field.

Candiotti (9-12) allowed two base runners through the first 6 2-3 innings before Buechele broke up the no-hitter with a sharp single to center field. Candiotti went eight innings for a complete game, allowing two hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.

The knuckleballer was an emergency starter as Ramon Martinez developed a sore right elbow.
