A man and woman who were seriously injured after their car plunged 400 feet over a cliff in the Santa Monica Mountains were in fair condition at St. John’s Regional Medical Center on Tuesday, authorities said.

Michelle Jones, 43, of Sherman Oaks lost control of her 1985 Nissan on Monday afternoon as she tried to negotiate a curve on Deer Creek Road, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The car overturned several times, but passenger Eric Levi, 26, of Sherman Oaks managed to climb out after the accident and walk up the mountain to the road, where he flagged down a passerby, officials said.

It took 1 1/2 hours for rescuers from Ventura and Los Angeles counties to pull Jones from the bottom of the ravine, two miles north of Pacific Coast Highway, officials said. The two were airlifted to St. John’s.

Both occupants were wearing seat belts, which authorities said probably saved the couple’s lives.
