DAGGETT : Sighting Fuels Speculation on Secret Aircraft Project

Share

A recent sighting over the Mojave Desert near Daggett by the cockpit crew of a United Airlines jumbo jet has increased speculation that the Air Force is secretly developing a new supersonic aircraft.

The pilot and co-pilot of Flight 934, a Boeing 747 en route from Los Angeles to London on Aug. 5, said that the unidentified aircraft, traveling very fast, passed below and behind them as they climbed through 23,000 feet just south of the restricted airspace where the Air Force tests many developmental aircraft.

No evasive action was necessary to avoid the aircraft, and the jet crew did not file an official report of the incident.

The Air Force and Federal Aviation Administration, which usually decline comment on secret test flights, said they were unable to provide any information about the incident.

Other sightings and sonic booms in recent months have led to speculation about the existence of developmental craft ranging from high-speed drones to bomber-like planes more than 200 feet in length.
