David Frost appears to have gotten a grip on his game since changing the way he grips a golf club.

Frost, who won the Buick Classic right after he made the adjustment, shot a six-under-par 66 Thursday and was tied with Lee Janzen after the first round of the Greater Milwaukee Open at Franklin, Wis.

Frost made a 35-foot eagle putt during his round, and Janzen made a 25-foot birdie putt on No. 18.

“You learn to handle things and you appreciate it when things go well,” said Frost, whose victory in the Buick Classic ended the worst slump of his career. “My game was so bad for 1 1/2 years. I’d make a bad shot and then a good shot and I didn’t know what was going to happen. I know what it feels like to be in a slump. I was helpless.”

Frost, who eagled the 527-yard second hole, birdied 11, 12, 14 and 16 starting on the back nine.

Richard Zokol and Dick Mast are one shot back. Duffy Waldorf, Ken Green, Payne Stewart and Tom Lehman are at 68.

Colin Montgomerie of Scotland shot a nine-under 63 to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the European Masters at Crans-sur-Sierre, Switzerland.

Three-time champion Seve Ballesteros of Spain and defending champion Jeff Hawkes of South Africa shot 72s.

Naomichi Ozaki, the Japan PGA tour’s leading money winner last year, beat Tsuyoshi Yoneyama 2 up in the opening round of the $640,000 Japan PGA Match Play Championship at Tochigi.
