BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Bournigal Admits He’s No Deep Threat

Although the Dodgers’ prospects have already made several interesting plays, Rafael Bournigal says there is one thing fans will never see.

“I will not hit a home run,” he said. “I don’t have a chance.”

Bournigal, who was recalled from Albuquerque only because Jose Offerman is suffering from a groin injury, hit one home run in 1,776 minor league at-bats.

That was at Vero Beach in 1989, and he really hasn’t come close since.

“I have hit the wall a few times, but then my teammates just rag me about it, saying that is as far as I can hit it,” Bournigal said. “And it probably is.”

The most home runs Bournigal has ever hit in a season in his life is three at Florida State University. But he was using an aluminum bat.

“I can’t even think about home runs,” said Bournigal, 5 feet 11, 160 pounds. “If I think about home runs, I strike out.”

Ramon Martinez is scheduled to test his sore elbow in Atlanta this week. He could return to the rotation this weekend at Dodger Stadium against the San Francisco Giants.
