Countywide : Drunk Driving Arrests Number 36

At least 36 people were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol in Ventura County over the Labor Day weekend, but authorities reported no fatal traffic accidents as the holiday came to a close Monday night.

California Highway Patrol officers snagged at least 11 alleged drunk drivers countywide Monday, in addition to 25 drivers arrested since the “maximum enforcement” period began at 6 p.m. Friday.

Authorities also reported three injury accidents:

* Shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday, a 46-year-old man from Inglewood was seriously hurt when he lost control of his motorcycle while traveling south on Naval Air Road in Oxnard. The man, identified as William Betzing, was taken to St. John’s Medical Center for treatment.

* About 6 p.m. Sunday in Santa Paula, a man in a truck crashed into the back of a parked pickup truck near Saticoy and 12th streets, injuring a 1-year-old boy and 28-year-old man. The two victims, who had been sitting in the back of the stopped pickup, were taken to Santa Paula Hospital for treatment. The driver of the truck was arrested on suspicion of felony hit and run after he fled the scene, police said.

* In Simi Valley on Saturday, a 36-year-old Simi Valley woman was seriously injured when she made an unsafe lane change and sideswiped another car while traveling west on the 118 Freeway, authorities said. The woman, identified as Brenda Monzo, was thrown from her vehicle as it overturned. She was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
