Low Blood Pressure Causes Few Worries

Share

People with high blood pressure are at greater risk for heart attacks, strokes and other problems. They are advised to monitor their condition regularly and follow doctors’ advice for taking medication or making lifestyle changes. But what about those whose blood pressure levels are below the “normal” blood pressure reading of 120/80?

Dr. John Linster, family practitioner, FHP North Torrance Center, Lawndale, a health maintenance organization

“Low blood pressure in an otherwise healthy person is not usually dangerous. Blood pressures of about 100/60 are considered lower than normal. If blood pressure is (always) this low and you are not experiencing symptoms such as lightheadedness, palpitations, dizziness and fainting, I would not do anything. If you have these symptoms, though, you need to find out what is causing them. It might not be the low blood pressure. Blood pressure can be lower at certain times than others--during emotional distress, infection or dehydration.

“If your blood pressure suddenly drops from normal to low, that can mean something is not right. You might be dehydrated or have side effects from medication. It bears checking.”

Dr. W. Allan Edmiston, Pasadena cardiologist; president of the American Heart Assn. Greater Los Angeles Affiliate

“Low blood pressure is in some ways protective to the heart. The heart does not have to work as hard.

“We don’t really worry much about (people with) low blood pressure.

“Low blood pressure is only important (to have checked out by a doctor) if you have symptoms such as dizziness or fainting. Blood pressure does tend to go up with age.”
