Whittier : Council Boosts Dial-A-Ride Funding to Restore Service

Share

The City Council voted unanimously this week to restore about $28,000 in funding that was cut last June from a transportation service for the elderly and handicapped.

Council members voted 4 to 0 to restore the money to the Dial-A-Ride program to provide more service in the evenings and on holidays. Backup taxi service will also be partially restored to reduce waiting times. The services were reduced in June when the program sustained a $60,000 budget cut.

Elderly and handicapped residents protested the original cut and presented the city with a petition bearing 1,219 signatures.

“It’s a question of how much money we can put back, versus how much service we can cut back,” Mayor Bob Henderson said.

The new schedule for service will be Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 7 a.m to 9 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday, 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Holiday service will be 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Officials said the new schedule will begin next week.
