Boris Spassky of France defeated controversial American chess legend Bobby Fischer on Wednesday in the fifth game of their “revenge match of the century” in Sveti Stefan, Yugoslavia. Spassky, who also won Sunday’s fourth game, now leads the match, 2-1, with two draws.

Wednesday’s game repeated the opening of the third game until Fischer, playing white, varied at move 18. At move 24, Fischer’s temporary sacrifice of a pawn failed because Spassky struck back with a powerful 25th move. After a poor decision at move 28, Fischer had no chance to save the game.

Fischer, who had not competed in 20 years, has played relatively weakly in the last three games after strong performances in the first two.
