Fun and inspirational.

Those are not necessarily adjectives you’d expect to hear in a description of an intense six-week course on job-seeking. But that’s the way organizers are describing the Adult Challenges Program, sponsored by the Conejo Coalition to Prevent Homelessness.

The classes, which will be held at the Center for Joyful Living in Thousand Oaks beginning Tuesday, are aimed at helping unemployed and underemployed people get work.

“What we are going to do is try to help people, through a sort of self-understanding process, find out what is the best career or job for them,” said Leslie Godwin, a Calabasas psychotherapist who will be co-leading the program. “And we will also give some concrete ways to approach a job.”

Godwin will be working with Westlake Village counselor Ellie Howe and other volunteers from the community, all of whom have certain areas of job-finding and job-landing expertise.

And where’s the fun part? “It’s not a lecture,” said Godwin. “Basically, it’s inspirational, people get to participate, have different projects they get to work on. The atmosphere is, ‘Let’s enjoy this.’ It’s not, ‘Make sure everybody’s paying attention,’ and things like that.”

The free series of workshops will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 4 p.m. for the next six weeks. The center for Joyful Living is located at 780 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd.

The Ventura Department of Parks and Recreation just came out with its catalogue of fall programs. It looks full and exciting. One of the more prominently displayed activities is the three-day Yosemite excursion planned for November.

We were all excited about the possibilities until we saw the heading above the brief description of the expedition:

“Fall in Yosemite.”

And what’s next? “Trip in the Grand Canyon?”
