Tamil rebels blew up a ferry in Sri Lanka on Thursday, killing about 30 people, a military officer said.

The rebels planted a bomb on a government ferry carrying 30 to 35 people in Koddiyar Bay, south of Trincomalee, the officer said. More than 20 soldiers were on board.

“All except two soldiers and one civilian are dead,” he said.
