Harvard Hires Expert to Ease Race Tensions

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The dean of Harvard Law School has appointed a negotiator to ease tensions over the racial makeup of the school’s faculty.
In a letter to students, faculty and staff, Dean Robert C. Clark announced the appointment of Roger Fisher, an international negotiations expert who retired from the law school in July.
Fisher will “explore ways in which we can create an environment that fosters greater mutual understanding and respect,” the letter said.
The law school has been under pressure to increase the number of minorities and women faculty. Of its 68 tenure and tenure-track professors, five are black men and seven are women.
