Plus Perfect Pays $207 for Victory at Del Mar
Plus Perfect, who hadn’t finished better than sixth in three previous starts this year, scored a $207.60 upset in Thursday’s eighth race.
Ridden by Paul Atkinson and trained by Sam Semkin, the 5-year-old Green Dancer gelding took the early lead, relinquished it to 2-1 second choice Allawinir, then rallied through the stretch and won in 1:45 1/5 for the 1 1/16 miles on turf.
Running with blinkers for the first time, Plus Perfect won for the second time in 10 lifetime starts. In his only other victory, he won by a nose in a seven-furlong maiden race on March 24, 1991, at Santa Anita.
