CHESS RESULTS : Fischer Leads After 2nd Straight Win

Share

Bobby Fischer won his second straight chess game against Boris Spassky on Sunday, the eighth game of their $5-million “revenge match of the century” in Sveti Stefan, Yugoslavia. Fischer leads the match 3-2, with three draws.

The game began with the Samisch Panno variation of the King’s Indian Defense, the liveliest opening so far in the match. Spassky, playing White, tried to launch an attack against Fischer’s king. Fischer parried successfully, and chances were about even when Spassky blundered horribly on move 31. Fischer won Spassky’s queen, clinching victory.

The ninth game is scheduled for Wednesday. The match will continue until one player wins 10 games. Moves of Sunday’s game are listed below.
