Fittipaldi Wins 4th, Point Lead to Unser
Emerson Fittipaldi raced to his fourth victory of the season and Al Unser Jr. grabbed the series point lead with a third-place finish Sunday in the Pioneer 200 Indy-car race at Lexington, Ohio.
Unser, whose only win this season came in the Indianapolis 500, moved one point ahead of previous leader Bobby Rahal, 163-162, after Rahal’s race day lasted only 3 1/2 laps when he ran over a curb, lost control and spun into a guardrail.
“I think the championship is very open for the three guys in front of me, but I still have a chance,” Fittipaldi said. “Anything can happen. I’ll be trying very hard the next two races, and so will the others. It’s possible those could be the best two races ever in Indy-car racing.”
Unser, the 1990 series champion, also vaulted past Michael Andretti, who dominated the race before going out just past the halfway point with engine failure, by finishing in the points for the 21st consecutive race--14 this season.
Defending series champion Andretti trails by 11 points and Fittipaldi is 18 back.
Fittipaldi was in control after Andretti pulled off the course on the 52nd of 89 laps.
Paul Tracy finished second, trailing his Penske teammate across the finish line by 9.999 seconds.
