Phil Plantier, who began the season as Boston’s starting right fielder, was called up by the Red Sox from the Pawtucket, R.I., of the International League. Pitchers Daryl Irvine and Scott Taylor, catcher John Flaherty and infielder-outfielder Steve Lyons also were promoted from Pawtucket after it was eliminated from the playoffs Saturday.

Plantier batted .331 with 11 homers in 53 games last season with Boston but tailed off to .245 with six homers and 28 RBIs in 95 games. He was demoted to Pawtucket on Aug. 13. Lyons, picked up by Boston June 29 after being released by Montreal, was sent to Pawtucket on July 16.

Nolan Ryan, bothered by a pulled muscle in his hip, might be held back by the Texas Rangers until the final home stand of the season, which will start Sept. 22, although he could rejoin the team in Toronto this weekend.
