Glendale : Perkins Building Dedicated

The $26-million, four-story Perkins Building at 141 N. Glendale Ave. was dedicated Tuesday although the move of Public Service offices and 240 employees was delayed until Sept. 25.

Within hours after the ceremony, the City Council authorized officials to seek bids to demolish the adjoining 63-year-old, six-story Public Service Building at 119 N. Glendale Ave., which preservationists had sought to save.

Officials said the old building is outmoded and unsafe and renovating it would be too costly.

About 160 employees in the old building have been packed for the move for two weeks, and 80 employees in rented offices around the Civic Center are also awaiting relocation. Unfinished details in the new building delayed the move, officials said.

“We’re all living out of boxes,” said Mike Cronian, a senior executive assistant in the public service office.

To accommodate the move, offices in the old building will close at noon Sept. 25. They will reopen at 1 p.m. Sept. 28 in the Perkins Building. Regular hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays will resume Sept. 29 in the new facility.
