A white supremacist was indicted by a federal grand jury Wednesday on a charge of taking part in the killing of a law enforcement officer during a gunfight Aug. 21 at an isolated mountain cabin.

Randy Weaver was indicted on a charge of aiding and abetting first-degree murder in the killing of Deputy U.S. Marshal William Degan of Quincy, Mass. He could be sentenced to death if convicted.

Kevin Harris, 24, has been charged with killing Degan during the shootout at Weaver’s cabin.

Weaver, 44, was arrested in 1990 on a federal firearms charge. He was scheduled for trial in February, 1991, but was charged with failure to appear when he did not show up.

Authorities said the confrontation at his cabin began when federal marshals keeping it under surveillance were fired on and Degan was killed.

Weaver’s 14-year-old son, Samuel, and his wife, Vicki, also were killed in the shootout that took Degan’s life, authorities said.
