MULHOLLAND DRIVE : Additional $36,000 Is OKd for Patrols
The Los Angeles City Council voted 12 to 0 Wednesday to spend an additional $36,000 to continue security patrols on Mulholland Drive by rangers from a state parks agency.
The action, approved without debate, will ensure that two Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy rangers continue to patrol the scenic drive on the crest of the Santa Monica Mountains.
Until now, the city and conservancy have split the cost of the patrols. But the conservancy, which owns numerous park properties along Mulholland, recently warned that it would have to eliminate funding for the patrols because of its tight budget and asked the city to pick up the entire tab of about $75,000.
The rangers issue hundreds of citations annually, mostly for illegal parking. In a letter to city officials, administrators pledged that the conservancy will seek to increase the number of tickets issued so that the fines the city collects from citations will cover the city’s costs.
