Raymond Floyd moved within one round of golf history by shooting a five-under-par 67 Saturday to take a one-shot lead after two rounds of the GTE North Seniors tournament at Indianapolis.

Floyd, playing in his second Senior Tour event, is trying to become the first player to win events on the PGA and Senior Tours in the same year. He won the Doral Open on the PGA Tour this year and ranks ninth on the PGA money list.

Floyd was 11 under at 133 after 36 holes at Broadmoor Country Club, one stroke better than Kermit Zarley, who shot a 69.

First-round leader Walter Morgan, playing with Floyd and Zarley, bogeyed two of the last three holes en route to a 73 and headed a group of five players tied for third at 136. The group also includes brothers Mike and Dave Hill, Bruce Crampton and Isao Aoki of Japan.

Mike Hill shot a 63, matching the tournament record established Friday by Morgan. But Hill’s effort was overshadowed when Floyd turned around a fair day with a late charge.

“Again I struggled on the greens,” Floyd said. “I had a difficult time making any putts. I feel real fortunate to be in the lead putting the way I am.”

David Frost breezed through Oakwood Country Club, shooting a six-under-par 64 to extend his lead to five strokes in the Hardee’s Golf Classic at Coal Valley, Ill.

Frost had six birdies to finish the third round with a 16-under 194 total on 6,751-yard course.

“It’s his tournament,” said Jay Delsing, who was eight strokes back at 202 after shooting a 65. “Frost is so far ahead, it’s going to be tough for anyone to catch him. He’s going to have to shoot above par and somebody else is really going to have to catch fire.”

Frost’s five-stroke lead after 54 holes is a tournament record.

Colleen Walker shot a four-under-par 68 to take a two-stroke lead over Dottie Mochrie, Patty Sheehan and Helen Alfredsson after the third round of the LPGA Safeco Classic at Kent, Wash.

Walker was at nine-under 207 on the 6,222-yard Meridian Valley Country Club course.

Mochrie also shot a 68. Sheehan, a three-time winner who is a victory away from entering the LPGA Hall of Fame, had a 69 and Alfredsson a 70.

Peter Senior shot a four-under-par 66 to take a one-stroke lead after three rounds of the Lancome Trophy tournament at Saint Nom La Breteche, France.

Senior, 33, of Australia, completed his third trip over the 6,756-yard course with a 201 total, nine under par.

Eduardo Romero of Argentina, the second-round leader and 1989 champion, dropped into a second-place tie with three others at 202.
