PRO FOOTBALL : DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Marinovich Hits Club Record Books

Never mind the Mad Bomber. Forgot those wild days when the AFL was young and the offenses were unstoppable.

Todd Marinovich, in his first game as the Raiders’ No. 1 quarterback, surpassed anything ever done by Daryle Lamonica, known as the Mad Bomber, and every other passer who has worn silver and black.

Marinovich set a team record with 59 passes Sunday, breaking the mark of 52, jointly held by Jim Plunkett (1980) and Jay Schroeder (last season). Marinovich completed 33 of those passes, just missing Plunkett’s club record of 34, set in 1985.

Marinovich passed for 395 yards, third-best in Raider history for a regular-season game, displacing Schroeder, who threw for 380 yards last week only to be benched. Cotton Davidson (419 yards in 1964) and Tom Flores (407 in 1963) have the top two passing efforts. Lamonica passed for 401 in the 1968 AFL championship game.

Asked if the Raiders’ slide to 0-3 would result in any changes, lineman Howie Long replied: “I don’t make changes. My name is not (owner) Al Davis or (coach) Art Shell. I play defensive football. I plan on showing up for practice and working my butt off. I hope everyone else does, too.

“Things are pretty down right now. They can’t get much lower.”

Linebacker Winston Moss, who has a groin injury, and defensive lineman Nolan Harrison, who has a knee injury, are both making progress after sitting out last week, but Shell wants to see how they look later in the week before deciding on their availability for Monday night’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
