Border Problems

Share

The (Sept. 18) editorial, “Light Show at the Border,” was probably the sappiest of many you have offered on Mexico-United States border problems, illegal immigration and related matters.

U.S. citizens are expected to, and do, respect Mexico’s sovereignty, immigration and other laws and regulations. That the U.S. should resent, and act upon the lack of Mexican reciprocity is, according to the editorial, basis for “increased animosity.” This, presumably, on the part of Mexico and Mexican immigration advocates in the United States.

Mexico’s demographics, with or without the North American Free Trade Agreement, will effectively prevent economic prosperity any time soon. Certainly not in this century, nor well beyond. With half of its population under age 16 and growing, illegal emigration has been an important safety valve for Mexico.

The editorial might have addressed some of these fundamental issues rather than couching what amounts to support for an open border with spurious claptrap.
