From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Former Gov. George C. Wallace, who was left a paraplegic when shot by an assassin in 1972, remained in critical condition with a blood infection but was showing some improvement. Wallace, 73, was taken Friday to a Montgomery, Ala., hospital where his heart failed and he had to be revived. He was rushed into surgery to find the source of the infection, which doctors labeled septic shock. Hospital spokeswoman Vicky Jones said doctors feel Wallace is “a little more stable,” but the next two days will be significant in his recovery. Wallace was released from a Birmingham, Ala., hospital last month after a two-week stay during which doctors said he had Parkinson’s disease, a degenerative ailment of the nervous system.
