Ailing former Gov. George C. Wallace improved for the second straight day but still faces an uphill battle to overcome a severe blood infection that threatened his life, his son said. “I must stress that we have a long way to go,” state Treasurer George Wallace Jr. said. But the younger Wallace said he is pleased with the improvement his father had made since he suffered a heart attack and underwent emergency surgery Friday at Montgomery’s Jackson Hospital.
