UAW, Ford Hope to Set Bargaining Standard: Cooperation between the United Auto Workers and Ford Motor Co. is so strong that the two sides would like their negotiations to set the pattern for the auto industry’s 1993 labor contracts. Peter Pestillo, the No. 2 auto maker’s vice president for corporate relations, and Ernest Lofton, a UAW vice president, said they have experience working out differences without hard feelings. Traditionally, the UAW has targeted one of the U.S. Big Three in negotiations to reach a basic deal that the union then takes to the other two companies. GM was the target in 1990, and Ford in 1987. “Hopefully, we’ll be the pattern setter,” Lofton said.
