Alyeska Critic Sues the Pipeline, Exxon, Wackenhut: Charles Hamel and his wife filed suit in U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia against Alyeska Pipeline Service Co., which operates the trans-Alaska oil pipeline, the former director of security at Alyeska, the Exxon Pipeline Co. and Wackenhut Corp., a big private detective and security firm. The Hamels charge that Alyeska and the others violated provisions of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act and other laws by running a “sting” operation and creating a “dummy” environmental organization in the process of spying on them. Charles Hamel, a persistent critic of the pipeline’s operation, listed illegal wiretapping, illegal searches of his trash and theft of unopened mail among the charges.
